Magic has a long and interesting history. It has been practiced since the Stone Age and believed by people around the world at various times in history. During the Middle Ages magic was widely believed in, mostly in Europe at that time but Asia has had a long standing belief in the supernatural and magical forces that surround us. Magic is one of the universal performing arts because it can easily be translated from one culture to another and throughout time.
Magicians performed feats for the Pharaohs of Ancient Egypt and Greek and Roman markets were full of magic performers. The Age of Enlightenment disrupted many magicians’ routines as people became demystified because of science, but this never ended its appeal and actually improved many tricks because of this new science.
Most people today realize that magic is based on purely natural laws and is a performance more than anything else. The entertainment comes from the show and the way the magician performs their tricks. They use many different objects including magic cards that look like regular cards, balls, coins and paper. A magic deck of cards can be one card printed over and over, have double images or even replaceable numbers and shapes. Some can fly, others can float, but a good magician should still be able to pick out the right card, or at least make the audience laugh and enjoy themselves.
Learning how to perform magic can be difficult. Every magician swears never to reveal their secrets except to other magicians and even then begrudgingly. A magic shop is a good place to start. The staff there can direct any novice in the right direction whether it is a tip to help them with a trick or magic books that help to explain them in more depth or new magic supplies that make performing that trick easier. Easy magic tricks can be performed by almost anyone, even kindergartners with the simplest props. Magic sets make the entire learning process much easier, and once a novice has a few tricks perfected they can seek out a more accomplished magician for training. Any mistake can ruin a career in magic however.
Everyone can enjoy magic. There are even tricks of magic online that don’t even require a magician to be mystified although they do make things more entertaining. A magic set can be found in many places and is one of the best ways to start. Magic is found in many places and is deeply rooted in many cultures. Even when people know that it is not true they still enjoy the ideas. Many popular stories and games are based on the belief in magic such as the computer game Magic Encyclopedia and the movie Lord of the Rings. Even the term “automagically” has been coined which refers to actions taken by computers that seem to happen magically, like your favorite song coming on at just the right time when the player is set to random.
